Low dose caffeine and focus: why a little goes a long way

Short answer: You don't need a big hit of caffeine to sharpen your focus. A study published in Psychopharmacology found that doses as low as 12.5mg, about a third of a cup of tea, measurably improved attention, reaction time and mood. The effect was similar from 12.5mg to 100mg. For reference, one piece of Zuum Everyday Energy Gum contains 30mg of caffeine.

Most of us think about caffeine in big doses: a double shot, a large can of energy drink, a pre-workout scoop. But when it comes to concentration, the research suggests more isn't always better. Here's what the science says about low dose caffeine and focus.

The study: how low can you go?

Researchers Hendrik Smit and Peter Rogers at the University of Bristol noticed a gap in the research. Plenty of studies had tested caffeine at coffee-sized doses, but very few had looked at the small amounts found in a cup of tea or a can of cola, under 50mg.

So they tested five doses: 0mg (a placebo), 12.5mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The study was double-blind, so neither the participants nor the researchers knew which dose was given each time.

  • Who: 23 adults, including both light and moderate-to-heavy everyday caffeine users.
  • How: after skipping caffeine overnight, participants completed a set of tests before and three times after each dose.
  • What they measured:
    • a long, simple reaction time task (testing sustained attention)
    • a rapid visual information processing task (testing focus and fast thinking)
    • a mood questionnaire, including how thirsty people felt

What they found

1. Every dose improved focus, even the smallest

All four caffeine doses significantly improved cognitive performance compared with the placebo. That includes 12.5mg, less than half the caffeine in one piece of Zuum Everyday Energy Gum.

2. More caffeine didn't mean much more focus

The researchers described the dose-response relationship as "rather flat". In plain terms, going from 12.5mg up to 100mg didn't give a proportionally bigger boost to focus. A small dose did much of the work.

That's useful to know if you want to stay sharp without the jitters, racing heart or crash that can come with a big dose.

3. Mood got a lift too

The effects on mood confirmed caffeine's stimulant action: people felt more alert after caffeine than after the placebo.

4. Regular caffeine users still benefit

You might expect daily coffee drinkers to be "immune" to small doses. The opposite was true for focus. The effects on performance were more marked in people who regularly had more caffeine. The researchers concluded that regular users build a tolerance to caffeine's thirst effect, but not to its effects on performance and mood.

Backed by Europe's food safety authority

This isn't a one-off finding. In 2011, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed the evidence on caffeine and concluded that 75mg of caffeine per serving increases both alertness and attention.

That's a little more than 2 pieces of Zuum Everyday Energy Gum (60mg), and less than a typical cafe coffee.

Why low dose caffeine suits everyday focus

For most daily tasks, like a long meeting, an afternoon of emails, study or a drive, you want steady focus, not a jolt. Low dose caffeine lets you:

  • Top up as you need it: a small dose now, another later, rather than one big hit that peaks and fades.
  • Avoid overdoing it: smaller doses make it easier to stay well under the roughly 400mg a day that Food Standards Australia New Zealand considers generally safe for healthy adults.
  • Protect your sleep: less caffeine late in the day means less to clear before bed.

How Zuum Everyday Energy Gum fits in

Zuum Everyday Energy Gum was designed around exactly this idea: a controlled daily boost, in a dose you can adjust.

Zuum Everyday Energy Gum Caffeine
1 piece 30mg
1 serve (2 pieces) 60mg
  • 30mg per piece: sits between the 25mg and 50mg doses in the study, so one piece is a genuine low dose.
  • Easy to adjust: have one piece for a light lift or two for a full serve, and space them out across the day.
  • Fast: the caffeine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth as you chew, so you feel it in about 5 minutes.
  • Clean: each piece is sugar free and also contains guarana and B vitamins. No sugar crash, no coffee breath.
  • Three flavours: Cool Mint, Spearmint and Watermelon.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Everyone's caffeine tolerance is different, so the right dose comes down to personal preference. Start low and see how you feel.
  • Always follow the directions on the pack.
  • Caffeine products aren't recommended for children, or for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or sensitive to caffeine.

The bottom line

When it comes to focus, you don't need much caffeine. Research shows doses as low as 12.5mg can sharpen attention and reaction time, and bigger doses add surprisingly little on top. A low, adjustable dose, like a piece or two of Zuum Everyday Energy Gum, lets you get the focus without overdoing it.
